Struggles of slow internet; your system works only as fast as your slowest part

There are many parts to your home network. Typically, a modem, one device at the least, your internet connection from your internet provider, a router and a modem. Any one of these can be obstructive to the system and be the cause of slow speeds.

Unfortunately, you can’t get back bandwidth if one of the devices causes a slow internet connection. However, you can do some things to ensure every part of the network is performing as it should.

Take an internet speed test to measure the internet speed and understand how it compares to the speed you pay for; this is a crucial step to identifying a slower connection.

Struggles of Slow Internet

Disconnect your modem and router, then re-connect

As we all need a break every now and again, so does your home network system. When you disconnect and wait a few minutes then re-connect it helps to clear the working memory and start again fresh on everyday jobs that could have bogged them down.

As simple as it sounds unplugging and re-plugging can actually give your internet speed just what it needed.

Chane location of your router

It isn’t a good idea for your Wi-FI to hide your router somewhere like the basement or a closet.

Keep your router free from any barriers. Things such as doors, large pieces of furniture, ceilings/floors or walls can weaken your signals. Also, things like monitors for a baby, cordless phones, microwaves or Bluetooth speakers can create slow signal to your Wi-Fi.

You are better off to put your router in a more central location, or better yet near where you would more often use the internet.

Off-peak hours for use of the internet

You might want to download large downloads such as upgrades to your Mac in the middle of the night when there isn’t much else is going on.

Internet plan upgraded

Make sure your internet speeds are up to par. If it has been several years since you upgraded your internet plan and maybe have more people using internet in your home, you started working from home more often or just use more internet, now would be a good time to look into speedier plans.

Typical reasons for slower speeds

Home networks are not the exact same for everyone. However, there are some common things that arise regarding issues for slow internet speed. Below are some common reasons for this issue:

  • ISP network congestion
  • Traffic for home network
  • Throttling
